The Ondo Police Command has paraded a 47-year-old suspect, known as Godson Tender James, for allegedly killing an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, in a hit-and-run incident.
The event happened at a checkpoint in the Ifon region of the Ose Local Government region.
According to the state police headquarters, the suspect is not only the cause of the terrible accident, but also a serial fraudster.
Prior to the incident, he was accused of defrauding a businesswoman of N4.4 million in Akure, the state capital, and attempting to flee the country.
Upon his arrest, the suspect stated that he attacked the police officer at the checkpoint because he mistook the officer for one of the renowned kidnappers who have been terrorising motorists on the Owo-Akure route.
“As I was driving, I noticed some people wearing police uniforms, one of whom was bending over on the road.” As I tried to manoeuvre, I heard a gunshot impact the front of my car.
“Believing that the cops couldn’t just shoot at me, I assumed they were robbers and fled to another location.” That’s when I smacked one of them. When I hit the individual, I was trying to save my own life.”
According to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Funmi Odunlami, the suspect had deceived multiple people and was attempting to exit the state.
Odunlami further stated that during the attempt to detain the culprit, he struck a police officer, resulting in the officer’s unfortunate death.
