The top Igbo sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has encouraged Biafra separatists to respect a 40-day ceasefire.

Ohanaeze claimed that the goal of the ceasefire is to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The ceasefire should begin on October 31, according to Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Factional Secretary General of Ohanaeze.

Isiguzoro claimed there were ongoing discussions over the potential for Kanu’s release in a statement he signed.

Isiguzoro stated: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo asks Biafra agitators to keep a ceasefire for a period of 40 days, refraining from any offensive action starting from October 31, 2023. This will help progress in this matter.

“Keeping order among the Biafra agitators is essential to ensuring that all aggressive acts stop for the allotted 40 days.

“By doing this, the ongoing discussions taking place behind closed doors will have the environment required to produce the desired solutions for Nnamdi Kanu’s release. Ohanaeze Ndigbo makes Ndigbo think of the Igbo proverb, “Every soup has a peculiar way of licking it,” highlighting how crucial it is to communicate with the appropriate authorities through diplomatic channels in order to get the desired outcomes.

“We kindly request that Ndigbo practise patience during this trying time. We recognise the suffering and challenges faced by the Southeasterners since Nnamdi Kanu’s detention.

“As stewards of our land, we reassure our people and ourselves that successful outcomes are anticipated following the Imo State governorship elections in November 2023. The Southeast will be in for a surprise when Nnamdi Kanu is released.

The body also pleaded with those Nigerians Kanu may have offended to be forgiving and to let Nigeria’s best interests triumph.

“It is crucial that all parties involved come together to work towards restoring peace and security in the Southeast.

He continued, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains dedicated to working behind the scenes, energising all pertinent stakeholders to achieve this crucial goal.
