An illegal fuel dump that caught fire in southern Benin close to the Nigerian border on Saturday killed at least 34 people, according to a government official.

Alassane Seidou, the interior minister, informed reporters that “a serious fire occurred in the town of Seme Podji.”

We have 34 deaths, including two newborns, sadly. Smuggled fuel is what started the fire, which is why their bodies are burnt.
