Between January and June 2023, there were at least 281,421 traffic offences nationwide that led to arrests.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja was informed on Monday by the spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Bisi Kazeem, that those detained had committed 307,554 offences.

Using a phone while driving, driving dangerously, going above the speed limit, going off the route, overloading, and not wearing a seatbelt were among the infractions he cited.

In total, he claimed, “The Corps detained no fewer than 281,421 people for 307,554 violations across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.

ACM Kazeem also revealed to NAN that the FRSC had benefited from leveraging technology to enhance its field operations since 2021 thanks to the usage of body cameras by its agents.

The technology, he continued, had also assisted in reducing transgressions of traffic laws and had proven useful during patrol and surveillance activities.

It is impossible to overstate how much the device will affect how the Corps operates in general.

“It assists with traffic monitoring, rescue efforts, and real-time data collection for decision-making.

The tool is important for maintaining workers’ resolve and attention while they provide service with dignity, according to Kazeem.

He cautioned drivers that there would be no exceptions for infractions and emphasised that they should adhere strictly to traffic laws and regulations as well as properly maintain their vehicles before using the highways.

The FRSC spokesperson underlined that only adhering to proper practises for driving would ensure the safety of all road users.

Road traffic collisions can be prevented if drivers properly follow the regulations of the road, Kazeem told NAN.
