28-Year-Old Boxer Dies from Brain Injury Sustained in Fight

Tragic loss in the boxing world as a 28-year-old fighter succumbs to a severe brain injury sustained during a match, raising concerns over safety in the sport.

Irish boxer John Cooney has sadly passed away at the age of 28 from injuries sustained during a championship bout on February 1, as confirmed by his promoter on Saturday.

Cooney was admitted to intensive care following an intracranial hemorrhage sustained during his super-featherweight title defense against Welsh fighter Nathan Howells in Belfast. The match was stopped in the ninth round, and Cooney was swiftly taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

“We are heartbroken to share that, after a week-long fight for his life, John Cooney has tragically passed away,” stated promoter Mark Dunlop representing the Cooney family. “John was a cherished son, brother, and partner whose special presence will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, John ‘the Kid’ Cooney.”

Cooney captured the Celtic super-featherweight title by delivering an impressive first-round knockout against Liam Gaynor in Dublin in November 2023. Unfortunately, a hand injury kept him out of action for the entire next year. He finally returned to the ring in October, securing a victory over Tampela Maharusi.
