2027: PDP Needs to Commit to Zoning Policy- Bode George

In order for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to prevail in 2027, according to former PDP National Deputy Chairman Bode George, the party must adhere to its basic principle of power rotation between the North and South.

During his national address titled “My Thoughts on The State of Our Country in the Last 25 Years: A Time to Chart A New Direction,” George made this statement while taking questions from reporters.

He was responding to a recent declaration by former vice president Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, that if the party chooses Mr. Peter Obi, the candidate from the Labour Party, for president in 2023, he will give up his bid in 2027.

Power rotation, according to George, must be untouchable. He also stated that the PDP ought to have learned from its 2023 failure.

“Our party has a grundnorm,” he declared. Our party’s founding father, Baba Ekwueme (former vice president Alex Ekwueme), and his team’s constitution will always serve as a guide.

We have suffered greatly as a result of breaking the law. Let’s learn from the mistakes we made. We’ve paid too much for it.

“For things to function properly, the party must follow the zoning and rotation procedures for party positions and elected positions concurrently,” as stated quite explicitly in Section 7 Subsection 3C.

He claimed that the party’s constitution, which called for power rotation, was intended to prevent any circumstance in which the military may retake control.

According to him, the country was organised into six geopolitical zones by the party’s founding fathers in order to include both majority and minority tribes and provide a sense of belonging to all.

This is due to the issue that has existed between majority and minority tribes since 1960.

“The minority tribe will be reduced to mere spectators while the majority tribe gets its way. According to him, that was the main reason behind coups and countercoups.

According to George, the idea that the six geopolitical zones share the top six posts in the country was proposed by the party’s founding fathers in the sake of fairness and equity.

The President, Vice President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Chairman of the party were among the posts he listed.

He went on, “They (the founding fathers) decided that all the positions held by the northern zones should rotate to the south zones and vice versa every eight years.

“The PDP became divided the moment we (the PDP) began to formally tweak that idea against our grundnorm.”
