Governor Seyi Makinde expresses confidence in his qualifications to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing his leadership experience and accomplishments in Oyo State.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stated that he meets the qualifications to run for the presidential election in 2027. However, he stressed that any announcement about his political future will be made at a time of his choosing.
On Friday, Makinde shared his comments with journalists during a visit to Fashola Farm in Oyo Town.
He dismissed the persistent speculations about his political ambitions, stating that such conjectures were premature and unnecessary.
Highlighting his ability to control the political narrative, Makinde stated that he would announce his intentions publicly at a time of his choosing.
“We didn’t organize the PDP reporters’ retreat due to anyone having presidential aspirations. I have no further comments on that matter, but let me assure you—I am old enough that if I wanted to pursue something, I would openly declare it.”
Makinde stated, “Therefore, there’s no room for speculation and nobody can advance my agenda. I will do so when the time is right.”
Reflecting on his political journey, Makinde highlighted the challenges he overcame, such as two unsuccessful attempts to secure a Senate seat, before winning the governorship with the support of Oyo State residents.

In 2019, the people of Oyo State made a decision. I had no godfather or sponsor; not a single person funded my journey to this position. It was entirely through the support and opportunity provided by the citizens of Oyo State that an outsider like me could step into this role.
Before that, you’ll come across videos asking questions like, “Oh Seyi, what has he accomplished in the past? Has he served as a councillor? No. Did he make it to the House of Representatives? No. What about the Senate? I attempted twice but was turned down.”
So, in terms of political experience – I may not have governance experience, but I’ve achieved success in business. They offered me the chance based on that. Prior to this period, all six states in the South-West were under APC control.
However, in Oyo State, we decided to stand out. Lacking experience, I was determined to win the people’s trust.
We created a document titled “Road Map to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019-2023,” and I told the people, “This is our plan in black and white; hold me accountable.” They entrusted us with the opportunity. Thankfully, it is coming to fruition.
Makinde also encouraged Nigerians to ensure the country does not become a one-party state, emphasizing the importance of political diversity so that talented individuals can contribute to national development.
He warned that Nigeria should not become a one-party state, as it is important for others to have the opportunity to showcase their talents.
