2024 Olympics: Poor Leadership Will Keep Hurting Us—Peter Obi

Peter Obi warns that poor political leadership will continue to harm Nigeria’s progress, including its performance in events like the 2024 Olympics. He emphasizes the need for competent governance to achieve better outcomes on the global stage.

Peter Obi, a politician and presidential aspirant for the Labour Party (LP) in the upcoming 2023 general elections, has shared some valuable insights that Nigeria should consider after its disappointing performance at the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympics.

Despite the loss, on Monday the former governor of Anambra State shared a series of tweets from his official X handle highlighting some positive milestones that were achieved by the country.

He encouraged Nigerians to get rid of their inadequate political leaders, who pose a greater threat than benefit to the country.

Yesterday, Obi expressed his mourning over Nigeria’s unsuccessful performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics and hopes that Nigerians will pay attention to the significant message conveyed by this international sports event.

Although the giant of Africa failed to win any medals, nine African countries were successful in doing so. Despite this, Nigeria was still able to draw some positive outcomes from its participation in the global event that revealed our existing issues. Four Nigerian athletes emerged as standout performers at the Olympics due to their recognition and support within conducive environments where nations prioritize talent development seriously.

Gold medals were won by Yemisi Ogunleye for Germany and Annette Echikunwoke for the United States of America, after feeling frustrated with her homeland Nigeria. At only 15 years old in River state’s Port Harcourt, Ebelechukwu Agbapuonwu displayed great athletic potential before changing nationality and religion to win silver medals for Bahrain. Rena Wakama, a Nigerian American head coach of Nigeria’s female basketball team called D’Tigress aged 32 was named as the best coach at the Olympics due to guiding her team into quarterfinals.

Her exceptional leadership and strategic skills did not go unnoticed. Nigerians persistently exhibit their talents, demonstrating that they can overcome any obstacles with suitable circumstances and competent leadership.

Until we overthrow the corrupt system and establish a new Nigeria, our flawed political leadership will persist in causing us irreparable harm. This message serves as a call to action.

No medals were won by the Nigerian team during the 2024 Olympics.

In a statement released on Monday, the Sports Ministry announced its immediate commencement of preparations for the forthcoming Olympics.

It promised to be fully prepared to “reverse the current and revive our sports dominance”.

In a statement on Monday, Kehinde Ajayi, spokesperson for the ministry said that their journey in Paris had provided them with inspiration to begin preparations for the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 games. They aim to rewrite history and demonstrate to the world that they are a dominant force in black athletics.
