On Friday in Abuja, the Supreme Court ruled that the Peoples Democratic Party’s primary election, which chose Hon. Jones Onyerere to run for senator for Imo West in the National Assembly election in February, was not valid.
The Supreme Court ruled that the primary election didn’t count because it was held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, instead of Orlu, where the senatorial office for Imo West is.
In his ruling on the appeal brought by Hon. Nnamdi Ezeani, Justice Emmanuel Agim ruled that the PDP had flagrantly broken Section 87(9) of the Electoral Act by holding the primary poll somewhere other than the designated location.
Due to its failure to nominate a candidate by the stipulated deadline, the PDP was declared ineligible to run in the senatorial election scheduled for next month, according to the Supreme Court.
