Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the emeritus archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, has warned politicians against using “warlike language” and always trying to win in the next general elections next year.

While appearing on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, Cardinal Onaiyekan issued the caution.

The religious leader and member of the National Peace Committee said that it is not democratic for candidates to insist on winning the next general elections no matter what.

The Archbishop pointed out that some politicians often use confrontational language in their campaigns and said that this would not help the country.

“I will ask politicians for them. Enough with the lies and the determination that we must win; some politicians keep repeating that we must win this election and will do whatever it takes to do so.

That kind of speech, he declared, “is not democratic; it is the speech of those who are going to war.”
