2023: PDP G5 draws the sword and issues fresh demands
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) issue appears to have been resolved after the party’s leadership struck an agreement with the PDP G5 governors.
Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State and a member of the PDP G5 Governors, has been at odds with Atiku since Wike was denied the party’s presidential nomination.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State are the other G5 participants.
The G5 are also requesting Iyorchia Ayu’s resignation as party chairman in an effort to purportedly lessen the North’s influence of the PDP. They are also angry that Atiku rejected Wike as his running partner.
However, there are signs that the crisis shaking the main opposition party may have been resolved by former military ruler General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd).
The seemingly productive negotiations saw the G5 presenting new requests.
An unnamed party official said that the G5 had promised to support Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, in exchange for giving in to their new demands.
The dependable source reports that their requests are as follows: “That the top government positions be distributed among the six geopolitical zones;
“That if Atiku wins, the party offices in the South should shift to the North and vice versa, and that the security chiefs should be distributed among all the geopolitical zones.”
