John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the archbishop emeritus of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, has accused Mahmood Yakubu, the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of deceiving Nigerians and acting dishonestly in the run-up to the 2023 elections.
During the 10th anniversary celebration of the Jesuit Memorial College, the Cardinal delivered a speech to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and had some quite harsh words to say about how things are done in the nation.
He argued that there must be a fundamental transformation and that actions have repercussions.
“We should reject the notion that it is OK to fake certificates in our country. Elections that are manipulated and you are instructed to go to court should not be tolerated. These actions have negative effects. According to Jesus, if you know the truth, it will set you free. At the gathering on Saturday in the capital of Rivers State, he remarked, “Accept that they have a very significant trust deficit.

Since I consider myself to be a religious person, I frequently ask God to pardon us and to reveal the truth to us because if we disclose the truth, things will proceed quickly. I still have hope that things would proceed quickly since Nigerians are lovely.
The opposition is contesting Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 2023 presidential election in court, and INEC has proclaimed him the winner. However, the cleric believes truth should always triumph out.
The pastor said, “The truth will set us free at the end of the day, regardless of what the judges or courts may rule.”
