When a split group known as New Afenifere appeared on Sunday, the crisis wracking the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere grew worse.
The organization was made public when its leaders met with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s presidential candidate, in Lagos State on Sunday.
The group expressed its support to Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, claiming that given his track record, he is more equipped to destroy the country.
The Afenifere split after Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the acting leader, endorsed Mr. Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party.
Some group members allegedly supported Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) nominee for president in the 2023 election.
However, Comrade Ajibade Adeyeye, Coordinator of the New Afenifere, said yesterday that his group opted to support the NNPP presidential candidate, highlighting the fact that they are of legal age to do so.
The new Afenifere declares that we are worried about the sociopolitical umbrella known as the new Afenifere and, I dare add, that we have chosen to take our future into our own hands to be ready for the approaching 2023 election.
“We think we are old enough to make decisions for ourselves and the future, therefore we have asked our older statesmen not to force anybody on us but to enable us to pick our chosen presidential candidate.
Therefore, to move toward a new Nigeria, the New Afenifere has chosen to move forward and support the candidacy of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his running mate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa.
