Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara takes a firm stance, declaring that his administration will not honor the ultimatum issued by the State Assembly regarding the 2025 budget.

The Rivers State Government has addressed the 48-hour deadline set by the Rivers State House of Assembly for Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resubmit the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

In its announcement, the state government made it clear that they would not adhere to the directive because they had not yet received an official letter formally communicating the summons.

On Monday, during its plenary session, the House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martins Amaewhule, demanded that the governor submit the bill within 48 hours in response to a recent Supreme Court judgment. This ruling had significant implications for the state’s budget process and prompted action from the Assembly.

The House promptly informed the governor of its decision through a letter dated March 3rd, signed by Amaewhule.

The deadline passed today, Wednesday.

However, in a letter dated March 5th and addressed to the Right Honourable Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, the state government stated that it had not received the mentioned resolutions from the Assembly.

In a letter signed by Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), it was mentioned that their response was prompted by finding a certain letter on social media.

The government stated: “As of the end of business on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, we have not yet received the letter in question. Neither the governor’s office nor the deputy governor’s office or that of the Accountant-General has received it.”

The government informed the House that during his state broadcast on March 2nd, the governor stated that despite his personal views on the Supreme Court judgement, he would comply with and implement its decisions as a law-abiding citizen in accordance with the rule of law and for the benefit of Rivers State’s residents.

The letter stated: “We have been in communication with our lawyers, who are still waiting for the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgment. We want to reassure you and all the good people of Rivers State that once His Excellency receives this judgment, he will work diligently to implement it in the best interest of our community.”
