The Senior Magistrate Court 1, sitting in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Friday awarded a N50,000 compensation to a 14- year -old girl, Zainab Mella, who was raped by a 37 -year -old man in the state.
The man, Khaji Nujiya, a farmer from Koromari village in Bursari local government area of Yobe State, was handed a 10 years jail sentence without an option of fine.
The prosecuting counsel, Fatima Mohammed, told journalists she was satisfied with the 10 years prison sentence handed out to the rapist.
She, however, expressed displeasure at the judge’s decision to award only N50, 000 compensation to the girl.
She said, “We are happy with the judgment because it will serve as a deterrent to those who intend to carry out this kind of acts. What I am however not satisfied with is the N50,000 compensation awarded to the girl. As a woman, I know that her virginity cannot be compensated for but that amount is too small.”
The counsel told the court that the case was reported at the Garin Alkali police division by one Mohammed Arania, the father of the girl, on September 9, 2016.
“The complainant told the police that the accused person stopped his daughter, Zainab Mella, while she was on her way to fetch animal feeds in the bush and forcefully had a sexual intercourse with the girl against her consent.
“As a result of the forceful sexual act with the girl, the victim sustained injury on her private part,” Barr. Mohammed added.
